Question 1

How do you answer "Aren't you overqualified for this role?" in an interview?

Accepted Answer

Name the real concern directly — flight risk — before they have to Explain why this scope is a deliberate choice, not a consolation prize Reframe the extra experience: faster ramp, mentoring capacity, judgment Address compensation expectations explicitly if they've dropped Commit specifically: what success looks like for you at this level in two years

Question 2

Why do interviewers ask "Aren't you overqualified for this role?"?

Accepted Answer

The stated question is rarely the real one. The interviewer fears three specific things: you'll be bored and leave within a year, you'll chafe at a lower title or pay band, or you'll overshadow a less-experienced manager. A strong answer names the real concern out loud and defuses it with evidence, not reassurance.

What mistakes should you avoid when answering "Aren't you overqualified for this role?"?
