Question 1

How do you answer "How do you prioritize competing deadlines?" in an interview?

Accepted Answer

Name your actual system — impact/urgency matrix, WSJF, blast radius — whatever you genuinely use Show how you surface conflicts early; escalation is a feature, not a failure Tell one story where two real deadlines collided Name the tradeoff you made and exactly how you communicated it Give the outcome — including what you deliberately deprioritized

Question 2

Why do interviewers ask "How do you prioritize competing deadlines?"?

Accepted Answer

Workload management is the unglamorous core of most roles, and everyone claims to be good at it. The interviewer is looking for a real decision system — and, more tellingly, evidence that you surface tradeoffs and communicate them instead of silently drowning until something breaks.

Question 3

What mistakes should you avoid when answering "How do you prioritize competing deadlines?"?

Accepted Answer

'I just work harder and longer' — that's not prioritization; it's the absence of it No system at all — ad-hoc urgency sorting means the loudest stakeholder always wins A story with no real tradeoff — if nothing was deprioritized, nothing was prioritized Never escalating — discovering a collision silently and absorbing it is how projects fail quietly Claiming everything is priority one — it tells them you can't make the hard call

Question 4

What follow-up questions come after "How do you prioritize competing deadlines?"?

Accepted Answer

What do you do when everything is urgent? Tell me about a deadline you missed How do you push back on an unrealistic timeline? How do you estimate how long your work takes?
